Biography
Abstract:
Brother David was born David Edward Brennan on June 21, 1943 in San Francisco, California. He attended Sacred Heart High School in San Francisco, and upon graduation entered the Novitiate for the De La Salle Christian Brothers. He received the habit of the Brothers on January 24, 1962 and was briefly known as Brother Kevin before changing his name back to David a few years later.
After completing the Novitiate, Brother David entered the scholasticate at St. Mary's College in Moraga, eventually transferring to Southern California where he received his A.S. from Trade Tech College at Los Angeles in 1966. Brother David's first assignment was as a teacher at De La Salle High School in Concord. On June 21, 1968 he took his final vows as a De La Salle Christian Brother. After the 1969-70 school year, Brother David left De La Salle to take classes at the University of Indiana. After half a year, he was reassigned to teach at St. Mary's College High School in Berkeley. Brother David continued to take classes when he could while at the high school, eventually receiving his B.S. in Business from Golden Gate University at San Francisco in 1973. Soon after, Brother David became Dean of Students of St. Mary's College High School, and Director of Finance several years later.
In July of 1979 he was reassigned to serve as Principal of St. Mary's Residence School at Mont La Salle, Napa, California. Brother David held this position for one year before being assigned to the position of Director of Finance for De La Salle Institute, the Brothers' administrative arm of the San Francisco District. In 1982 he was selected as the next President of Mont La Salle Vineyards. He remained at the helm of the Brothers' famous California winery until it was sold in 1989. In 1989 he once again served as the Director of Finance for De La Salle Institute. Brother David held this post until 1995 when he was elected Visitor of the San Francisco District.
After serving two terms as Visitor, Brother David took a year long sabbatical beginning in July of 2003. In July of 2004 he became the Director and Chairman of the Lasallian Education Fund Board of Trustees, the fund raising arm of the San Francisco District Brothers. He remained active with the Lasallian Education Fund until 2008 when he officially retired to the Holy Family Community at Mont La Salle. Brother David died on February 15, 2016 from complications of Alzheimer's Disease at the age of 72.
Brother David is buried at the Brothers' cemetery at Mont La Salle, Napa, California.
