Biographical / Historical

Francis Joseph Norton was born on March 11, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York to Francis Edward and Catherine Norton. He attended St. Matthias elementary school and then graduated from St. James', which during his time there, became Bishop Loughlin High School (1933). After graduating in 1936, he attended Manhattan College and graduated with a degree in education in 1940. He entered the Novitiate in Barrytown in 1940 and became Brother Adelbert James. The Scholasticate at De La Salle College, in Washington D.C. followed. There he earned his master's degree at Catholic University. His first teaching assignment was at Bishop Loughlin High School. Brother James began teaching at Manhattan College in 1952 and within a year was named Chairman of the Education Department. In 1964, he became Director of the newly created Division of Teacher Preparation, and in 1970 he assume the role as first Dean of the School of Teacher Prep, a post he held until his retirement in 1983.

Brother Norton also served as an adjunct professor of catechistis at Maryknoll Seminary and earned his Ph.D. in guidance and counseling from St. John's University in 1955.

Brother James Norton died on November 17, 2001.

Brother A. James Norton worked on the publicity for the Centenary Year of the Brothers in America. It started as a District assignment and grew into a national event. In the summer of 1948, he put together at Oakdale and De La Salle 5 scrapbooks of: 1. Newspaper articles and articles in all Catholic journals in the U.S; 2. Pictures of events; 3. Programs and other memorabilia; 4. Major speeches given at key events in NY, Albany, Brooklyn, Chicago, etc.; 5. A diary of all that Brother James Norton did, i.e. contacts made.
