    Tolton Center, named after the first African-American priest ordained in the United States, opened in September 1991 after a study of the literacy needs of Chicago's near South Side. It was founded by Brother Michael Quirk. It is operated by the Christian Brothers. Tolton's program is organized into four levels: literacy, basic skills, pre-GED and GED. It has expanded to six locations in the Chicago area.
