Brother Charles Henry Buttimer, FSC, took office as superior general, the first United States citizen to hold this highest office, on May 23, 1966. He served as Superior General until 1976. He also served as the First Provincial of the Long Island-New England District, 1957-1961. He died on December 15, 1982 in South Kingstown, RI due to a stroke.
